This is basically due to the fact that the food and water offered in cheap and third class restaurants are often dirty, not filtered and bad, and can even lead to food and water poisoning.

That’s why it’s important for the tourists to eat and drink only at standard, decent looking, clean and economic restaurants and hotels. They should ensure that they drink only mineral water throughout their travel and tour to remain fit and healthy. Drinking abundant water before going out on long trips would be a very good idea. Filling themselves with plenty of water would also make sure that they remain hydrated and energetic throughout the day.

The next thing that needs to be kept in mind while traveling to various Indian places is hygiene. Keeping oneself hygienic at all the times, would prove to be very beneficial. This would ensure that the tourists could go back to their own places and homes whenever they desired, and that they would not have to consult doctors. Some places in India are quite dirty, polluted and congested as well. That’s why, they should wash their hands before eating anything.

People traveling in India while staying at hotels or restaurant rooms, should not use toothbrushes, razors and cigarettes that belong to others in order to avoid skin infections and other diseases. Carrying toilet papers would be quite beneficial for the tourists, as they could come across dirty toilets, wherein toilet papers would be missing or would not be available. India is a place where foreigners are prone to contracting infections like hepatitis, meningitis and typhoid.

Therefore, it would be advisable for them to get vaccinated for the above illnesses and then enter the country. If the tourists belong to a nation that has had confirmed cases of yellow fever in the past, they would need to show their inoculation credentials and documents to the airport authorities and the customs. It would also be wise on their part to maintain safe distance from and not tease naughty animals like monkeys and stray dogs.

The stray dogs and monkeys of India are not as friendly as they may seem to be. So keeping a safe distance from them would ensure that they do not get bitten. Also, while roaming around different shops in India, they need to be very careful regarding the price and quality of the products they buy.

Some of the Indian retail sellers are very clever and try to cheat the foreigners, as and when they get favorable opportunities. They generally demand high prices for most of the products and end up cheating them, as the latter are unaware of Indian prices. It would be advisable for the tourists to bring along Indians with them or have an overall idea about the price and quality of various products in India, that could save them from getting robbed and swindled.

Also, one of the best times to visit India for the tourists would be the winter season when scores of people from all across the world come here and spend a great time. The winter months here usually are November, December and January. Traveling from one place to another in these months is generally very convenient and pleasant. It would be a little difficult and cumbersome for the tourists to travel within India during the summer season.

The tourists, domestic and specially the international ones, while traveling to India, must be aware of the various civic laws, rules and regulations that are followed there. Smoking in public places has been banned by the government of India since October 2, 2008. A fine of Rs 200 is imposed on the lawbreakers, irrespective of whether they are Indians or foreigners. Also, the tourists must respect the traditions, cultures and customs that are prevalent in India. Only then they can expect the same kind of respect from Indians. Indians don’t like those foreign tourists who disrespect their country.

While traveling in India and exploring various places the foreign tourists should be careful about the way they dress. In the case of women, wearing tight fitting and low cut tops, shorts and short skirts, halter tops and bare waists, grab a lot of attention of the males, and the women tourists may end up getting undesired and unwanted advances from the men of India. In order to avoid all these, the women should dress up in orthodox styles by wearing long skirts or salwar kameez. Other similarly orthodox styles would also suit and protect them from such advances.

Men and women tourists should carry warm clothes whenever they visit cold places and the hill stations and high altitude areas of India. Visiting temples in India would again require women tourists to cover up and wear conservative dresses. Something that covers them from top to bottom.
