Agatti Islands – Of Lagoons, Islands and Travel Pleasures

My sister had this ardent desire that before her son left for higher studies abroad, we as a family should meet and enjoy the time together. She believes that this would only enhance interpersonal relations between family members and is necessary in today’s fast life.

Lakshadweep Island

So when her travel holiday was sanctioned by her office, we hit upon Lakshadweep Islands as a destination as we wanted our experience to be unique and memorable.  Located on one of the coral atolls in this pristine land of Lakshadweep, the Agatti islands was where we decided to spend our family get together. This land in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep in India is around 459 km off the coast of Kochi and around 7 km to the southwest of Bangaram which is the island nearest to this place. The other island that is nearby is the Kavaratti Island. Spanning over around 2.7 square kilometres the Agatti Island is an ideal holiday spot giving the best travel pleasures.

This island is open to all tourists since long but visitors have to follow certain rules when they go on a tour here. They are required to get an entry permit from the local administration and I was proud to see my sister sift through these norms like a professional. Her profession as a tourist guide is surely helping here in her everyday life. If the visitor has a confirmed place of stay then the entry permit gets easier to obtain. Agatti Islands has only two good hotels and resorts. One is the Agatti Island Beach Resort popularly known as the AIBER and the other is the Sea Shells beach Resort. We lived in the AIBER.

Sea Shells Beach Resort

After all the formalities were over, we proceeded to our resort. I saw that along the island there was a lovely road that ran through. Many were bicycling their way ahead here. I thought even I could do that. I loved this kind of adventure.

I clicked away to glory on my camera when I saw the picturesque surroundings around and I was quite happy to satisfy my nephew’s curious questions on photography with relevant answers. The nature was bountiful here and this is the only island in Lakshadweep which has a good airport.

Agatti islands boasts of a great scenic beauty and the way it exhibits the harmony between the traditional past and the modern present is something to see to actually believe. The whole land is laden with beautiful golden sand, very clear waters in the sea, dense natural vegetation and the loveliest of coral reefs. This Arabian Sea beauty certainly has the best of flora and fauna and satisfies the travel quotient of an ambitious traveller.

We quite enjoyed the whole tour. It was all organized. There was one activity everyday that we were scheduled for. I wanted to explore the entire area by myself, so I let my sister and family take the hotel tour facility while I went off on my own. The Agatti Island offers a wide variety of adventurous sports. I tried that first. This was something I had always wanted to do. Just bask in the sun and take part in those adventurous activities that I normally see on travel channels on television or that I read about in travel blogs and magazines. So a little bit of snorkeling and then fishing and my desire was fulfilled. Then I also went kayaking. My friend Rohan had always spoken of having done kayaking in his adventure holidays and was quite thrilled by the whole experience. There were tourists who were diving deep into the waters of the Arabian Sea and enjoying themselves. There also were special boats that were made of glass. This boat ride gave me a chance to see the aquatic life below the sea waters.

Agatti Island

My nephew and niece came back in the evening and told how Agatti islands is known as the Gateway to Lakshadweep, as they had heard their tourists guide say this. The other major attraction here is the calm and the serene ambience that one gets here. I bet that people usually would be coming here just to experience the tranquility. The idyllic ambience, the pleasant weather and the enthralling views around are reasons sufficient enough for anyone to pack their bags and embark on a holiday travel here.

I wouldn’t hesitate in calling this the paradise of South India. A great holiday spot I began to understand why my sister had chosen this as the destination. Not only is it going to be memorable but always the best amongst family travels. This eternally blissful feeling does not come anywhere and everywhere that we travel. There is something very special about this place that only a person who comes and lives here would be able to identify with.

As I write this blog, I still can see the lovely lagoons, the captivating beaches with the silvery sand, the verdant surroundings of coconut trees and the beautiful waves of the sea, in front of my eyes. With its multicolored hues and beautiful attractions, Agatti islands is a must see in your travel itinerary.
